Want to beat the heat? Go shopping!
There's no better way to update your wardrobe on the cheap than to buy new seasonal accessories. The must-haves for summer? A pair of face-framing sunglasses, a flowing scarf, a roomy weekend tote bag and a lightweight hat to top it all off.
Here are accessories from stores around town that are sure to take your summer wardrobe from drab to fab.
Town or country
Whether you're sitting on the patio sipping margaritas with the girls or headed out for a weekend on the lake, here are four essential, yet very versatile, accessories.
Clockwise from left: pink, coral and white floppy straw hat, $19.97, Charming Charlie; Calypso St. Barth for Target natural straw tote with scarf embellishment in pink, $24.99, Target; Tolani fuchsia "starburst" scarf, $86, Hip, Chic Boutique; Fendi square sunglasses, $375, Eyes Nouveau.
Get carried away
With summer's relaxed schedule come possibilities for planned vacations and spur-of-the moment getaways. A spacious tote bag will take all your essentials from the beaches of Miami to a campground in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Throw in just about anything you need -- picnic foods, a beach towel, even a weekend's worth of clothes. Traveling someplace far away? Pack the tote flat in your suitcase and use it to bring home souvenirs.
Clockwise from top: Kate Landry flower detail tote in turquoise, $69, Dillard's; orange and white straw tote, $24.94, Old Navy; Doll House Decor summer tote and standard towel set, $55, Chicks Off the Bricks.
Top it off
Whether you're just trying to keep cool and sunburn-free or you want a day free from fussing over your hair, a great summer hat can be the perfect solution. Just throw on a fashion-savvy hat (fedora, floppy, Panama or cowboy), and you'll instantly look put-together -- minus any actual effort.
From left: Mudd straw cowboy hat, $18.20, Kohl's; Collection Eighteen straw Panama hat, $20, Macy's; David & Young straw fedora with feather, $25, Macy's.
When you live in North Texas, you can't consider sunglasses anything less than essential. But with so many frame shapes, it can be hard to find the one that suits your face. When in doubt, ask someone else (after all, it's other people who have to look at you while you're wearing the glasses). If you buy your shades from an eyeglass store, have store personnel help you determine which shape is most flattering. Here are three options in popular shapes: aviator, round and cat-eye.
From left: Face a Face cat-eye sunglasses, $358, Eyes Nouveau; Simply Vera Vera Wang aviator sunglasses, $20.40, Kohl's; Mossimo rounded sunglasses, $15, Target.
Who says scarves are just for the cold days of winter? Whether you choose a bright summer pattern or a solid neutral, lightweight scarves are great for helping you transition from day to night. Throw your scarf over a T-shirt for a casual daytime outfit, or pair it as a shawl with a basic white sundress for a chilly evening inside a performance hall.
