Rescuers recovered the body of a 14-year-old Fort Worth boy in Benbrook Lake on Tuesday, almost three days after he went missing.
Authorities found Miguel Gallegos near Mustang Park, where he was reported missing Saturday night, said Capt. Neal Bieler of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
A cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office. Bieler said the teen and four or five friends were on a paddle boat that strong winds pushed into the lake.
Gallegos was trying to swim back to shore when he disappeared, Bieler said. He was not wearing a life jacket, officials said.
Leonard Middle School, where Gallegos attended, had grief counselors present Tuesday to speak with students and staff, Fort Worth district spokesman Clint Bond said. Gallegos had been in the district since 2006, when he started at De Zavala Elementary. A fund has been established to help the family with funeral costs. Donations can be made to the Miguel Gallegos Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo bank in North Texas.
