A 16-year-old Southwest High School student who died last month after an off-campus fight died from natural causes, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office has ruled.
The cause of death of Jose Guzman was ruled "sudden cardiac death with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy."
Guzman, a junior, fell unresponsive on April 1 while fighting a freshman student behind the Southwest Community Center, across the street from the school. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Family and friends have said Guzman had a heart condition. Police were awaiting the autopsy results to determine if injuries suffered in the fight or a medical emergency led to the teen’s death.
