GRAPEVINE -- Chicago style or New York? Thick or thin? Pizza or pie?
Restaurant owners in Grapevine will let festivalgoers decide which is best during the 27th annual Main Street Days.
The festival kicks off today with live music, carnival rides, games, shopping and -- new this year -- the Pizza Piazza.
While guests stroll through the exhibits, they can sample fresh-baked pies from more than a dozen local restaurants and vote for their favorite.
Never miss a local story.
Of course, this being Grapevine, the three-day event will feature a variety of wines. But this year, they will come not only from Texas, but also from California, Oregon, Washington and Italy.
If a fine wine and pizza do not sound like a palatable combination, guests can enjoy ice-cold beer with their slice. Joel Erickson, area sales manager for Ben E. Keith, said 18 varieties of beer will available at the gazebo on Main Street. They include five Texas beers and an Italian beer that will be served at the Italian wine booth, he said.
Houston's Saint Arnold Brewing Co. will offer craft beer -- defined as annual production of less than 6 million barrels, said Kendra Harrell, Saint Arnold sales manager.
"If focusing on special artisan pizzas, it makes sense to feature local, handcrafted breweries," she said.
Returning this year to Main Street is the Central Market Grilling Competition, where pit masters can show off their skills with sessions leading to a championship grill-off Sunday. Each session will provide steak, chicken or pork, along with the vegetables for grilling. Contestants bring their own sauces, spices, rubs or other flavorings. Session winners will receive a $100 gift certificate for Central Market.
Contestants in the championship round will grill pizza on a Big Green Egg, a ceramic grill/smoker, which they get to take home after the competition. The grand champion wins a $500 gift card for Central Market.
Other "must-visit" booths include the three that will help people in need.
They are Joey Wilkins Foundation, AMBUCS and Uncle Izak's Sno-Cone booth. Proceeds from those booths will help various causes.
