KELLER -- Amid talk of budget woes, Keller trustees had a lighter moment at Thursday night's school board meeting.
With only mild disagreement, they approved the name, mascot and colors for an elementary school scheduled to open in August. Ridgeview Elementary will be the home of the Rattlers, whose colors will be red and black.
A committee of administrators, teachers and community members came up with three options: Rattlers, Alliance Aviators and Centennial Rangers. About 300 future students (kids now at Woodland Springs and Florence) cast electronic ballots. Rattlers beat Aviators by 11 votes and Rangers by 12.
Trustee Kevin Stevenson said he was a little disappointed by the vote. "This is our 100th anniversary, so I thought it would be nice to name the school Centennial."
Never miss a local story.
Other board members said they would follow the will of the voters. Board President Cindy Lotton asked for any further questions: "Speak now or forever keep your rattlers."
The vote was 6-0, with a reluctant Stevenson approving the slate.
The board also approved Cory Wilson, principal at Bette Perot Elementary, to lead Ridgeview.
