FORT WORTH -- A 30-year-old man police say was caught in the act of raping a woman whom he had ambushed early Friday was in jail Monday with bail set at $30,000.
Sgt. Deven Pitt said the victim was walking home in north Fort Worth shortly after 2 a.m. Friday when the man, whom she did not know, suddenly attacked.
"He caught her by surprise and punched her in the face, which kind of dazed her," Pitt said. "Then he drug her to an alley, choked and beat her in the face."
A concerned person heard the woman's screams and called 911. Patrol officers T.A. Verrett and A.C. Holt, who were in the area, had gone to investigate when they found a man raping a woman in the alley near the 2500 block of Azle Avenue. "When they got there, he was still on top of her," Pitt said.
Never miss a local story.
The woman, who suffered a broken arm in the attack, was taken to a hospital, Pitt said.
The officers arrested the man, identified in a police report as Jorge Gausin-Martinez of Fort Worth. He was being held in the Mansfield Jail. Pitt said investigators are looking to see whether the man could be responsible for any other sexual assaults in the city.
Tarrant County court records show that Gausin-Martinez had a 2010 misdemeanor conviction for possession of marijuana.
