First lady Michelle Obama praised Arlington's efforts to fight childhood obesity during a speech Tuesday at the National League of Cities conference.

Obama, who was promoting her Let's Move fitness campaign, highlighted Arlington's challenge last year to get students to take at least 10,000 steps a day.

As part of the challenge, pedometers were given to 4,500 fifth-graders to see how many steps they could log over the summer vacation.

The top three walkers won luxury suite accommodations at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

"The winner of the challenge logged 6.8 million steps in just three months, and that's something," Obama said.
