ARLINGTON -- Anaiz Rangel, now a sixth-grader at Beth Anderson Elementary, took 6.8 million steps over the summer to get to first place in the city's and school district's Let's Move With the Mayor contest.
The success of the project, in which pedometers were given to graduating fifth-graders, brought federal officials and a celebrity to Anderson on Wednesday. Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Raghib "Rocket" Ismail stressed the importance of proper breathing, and Donna Richardson Joyner of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition led aerobics and stretching. Even Mayor Robert Cluck and Superintendent Jerry McCullough joined in.
The event was among many nationwide marking the end of the first year of first lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign to fight childhood obesity. One in 3 children is overweight or obese, according to the White House.
