FORT WORTH -- A 22-year-old Fort Worth man was in the Mansfield Jail on Friday in connection with the shooting of a woman found dead along an east Fort Worth road Sunday.
Gilmer Vertiz is accused of shooting Brenda Salinas, 48, in the head and dumping her body in the 5500 block of Old Handley Road, where it was found shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday.
Bail is set at $1 million.
Homicide Sgt. J.D. Thornton said officers, acting on information developed during the investigation, conducted surveillance Thursday at a Fort Worth residence where Vertiz was staying.. He said Vertiz was pulled over and arrested for traffic citations after he was spotted leaving the home in a car.
Never miss a local story.
He was later arrested on a murder warrant after being questioned by homicide detectives.
Thornton said Vertiz and Salinas were at the same bar early Sunday but were not together.
"All indications are right now that they did not know each other prior to that night," Thornton said.
He said police have seized Vertiz's car, which they believe was used to move the body.
Thornton said the location of the shooting remained under investigation Friday.
"There appeared to be some extensive cleaning done in the car, so it was difficult to tell whether it actually happened in the car or whether she was just transported in it," Thornton said.
