Joseph Brefo Agyen Jr. and Caleb Michael Day were two of four young men recently honored by the Beta Tau Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity during its annual Beautillion.
The scholarship fundraiser was held March 29 at the Dee J. Kelly Alumni Center at Texas Christian University.
Tarrant County Commissioner Roy C. Brooks was the master of ceremonies at the event, which was organized to recognize male high school seniors for their academic achievements and community service.
Member Blake Moorman said the local alumni chapter sponsors the event to honor and encourage young men in the community.
Agyen, a senior at Juan Seguin High School, is the son of Janice and Joe Agyen. He was accompanied by Jordan Mitchell, a freshman at Tarrant County College. Day, a senior at Mansfield Timberview High School, is the son of Deanna Day and Brian Turner. Nadia Fitzpatrick, a senior at North Crowley High School, accompanied him.
Other honorees included Benjamin Louis Batie II, a senior at North Crowley High School and son of Kimette Johnson and Benjamin Batie; and Lester Bernard Bell Jr., a senior at Southwest High School and son of Angela and Lester Bell.
Toylicia Cotton, a senior at North Crowley High School, accompanied Batie. Ebonee Harris, a freshman at J.J. Pearce High School, accompanied Bell.
The organization is recruiting African-American and other minority men to participate in next year's Beautillion. Call Moorman at 817-239-7198 or learn more online at www.betataulambda.org.
Make a difference: See your volunteer hours make a real difference in the community by joining the Junior League of Arlington, which trains its members in various ways to help improve the quality of life in the community.
More than 500 members contribute funds and volunteer hours throughout the year to support league programs. It's not all work, though. You make new friends, acquire new skills, find new mentors and receive leadership training.
The league will hold an open house at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at its Center for Community Service, 4002 W. Pioneer Parkway, for women 21 and older who are interested in becoming members. You do not have to be an Arlington resident.
