Local chefs, celebrities pair up for 'Iron Chef'-style match

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

It's a cooking competition where everyone wins.

The 11th annual Cookin' for Kids pairs a local celebrity with a top area chef in an event where teams race against time to create winning cuisine.

The teams can't prepare, either. When they come in, organizers give them a bag of food and a limited time to cook. Each team creates two plates: one will be auctioned off to the highest bidder; the other will be for the judges.

Trust me. These cooks can whip up a great dish.

Participating chefs will include Terry Chandler of Fred's Texas Cafe; Frederick Angevin of the Four Seasons in Las Colinas; John David Barrett of Cafe Art; Jon Bonnell of Bonnells; Deb Cantrell of Brownie Points; Mario Jasso of El Paseo and Tres Joses; Franson Nwaeze of Chef Point Cafe; Dena Peterson of Cafe Modern; Denisa Paul Shavandy of Chef Denise Cooks; Michael Thomson of Michaels; and Charles Youts of Classic Cafe in Southlake.

They'll be joined by celebrity partners such as Arlington real estate broker Jamie Adams; Pam Minick, marketing director at Billy Bob's; jazz saxophonist Joseph Vincelli; country singer Sonny Burgess; and Rebecca Miller, meteorologist at KXAS/Channel 5.

You not only get to watch them cook; guests will also enjoy samples from the chefs' restaurants and a charity auction.

Tickets cost $100 for the VIP party, which starts at 4 p.m. Sunday.

General admission tickets are $50. Those doors open at 5 p.m. at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, 1300 Gendy St.

Proceeds help raise sponsorship money for children in Kids Who Care, a performing-arts troupe.

Taste and tour: Taste the food and tour the attractions during the annual Grand Prairie Taste & Tour.

Nearly 25 restaurants and 10 local attractions will be featured during the event scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ruthe Jackson Center, 3113 S. Carrier Parkway.

Tickets are $15 in advance at the chamber, 900 Conover Drive, or $20 at the door.

Call 972-264-1558 for details or learn more online at www.grandprairiechamber .org.

Home tours: Want to see how residents lived in the 1900s?

Tour the Grand Prairie home of Dr. Horace V. Copeland, who helped deliver more than 4,000 babies during his career.

Guides from the Grand Prairie Arts Council provide tours of the historic Copeland home, 125 S.W. Dallas St., from noon to 4 p.m. the first Saturday of each month.

The program is a project of the Grand Prairie Historical Commission.
