The titles for the first Women Texas Film Festival, taking place Aug. 19-21 at the Texas Theatre in Dallas, were announced Tuesday. Six feature films and 31 shorts will fill the schedule.
The opening-night movie is the Australian comedy Girl Asleep, which won prizes at the Seattle International Film Festival and the Adelaide Fim Festival. It’s a coming-of-age tale directed by Rosemary Myers and starring Bethany Whitmore as a 15-year-old desperately clinging to her childhood.
Other notable titles at the festival include: Irene Taylor Brodsky’s Beware the Slenderman, a documentary about an internet phenomenon that drove two girls to attempt murder; Christina Kallas’ relationship drama 42 Seconds of Happiness; Celia Rowlson-Hall’s experimental MA; Rachel Talalay’s On the Farm, a dramatization of the true story about the hunt for a killer of prostitutes in Vancouver; and Sharie Vance’s Miz Markely and Me, a documentary about the singer Lisa Markely, who will also perform after the screening.
Never miss a local story.
In a release, WTxFF founder and artistic director, Justina Walford, said, “We are thrilled to bring this celebration of female film making to Dallas, which is home to some of the most enthusiastic and discerning film audiences in the entire country. Rosemary Myers’s richly sardonic Girl Asleep bursts with candy colored images of girlhood while confronting some darker realms of our heroine’s heart. And it is a vision so truly female, created for our eyes.
“Add to that, a lineup of films that amuse, surprise, provoke and frighten. and filmgoers will get a taste of the skill and imagination of some very talented women pulling the strings and at the helm of visual storytelling. We look forward to putting the women responsible for these stories on a pedestal here in the heart of Texas.”
Film festival passes and tickets are on-sale now. Early birds can get VIP passes for $95 until Aug. 1. Regular price is $150. Single ticket admission is $11. Tickets can be purchased at http://prekindle.com/promo/id/24545708304714170
