There is no official word from the station yet, but it looks as if WFAA/Channel 8 has a new weekend meteorologist.
What word there is comes from Facebook, via one of the station’s other meteorologists, Colleen Coyle, who posted Thursday that Jesse Hawila (”rhymes with tequila”) has joined the Channel 8 weather team, and will be handling the Saturday and Sunday-night weather shifts.
Hawila confirmed via Facebook email that he has jointed the station — although it’s pretty clear, since he has already done several Facebook posts about DFW weather. He fills a vacancy created by the departure Ashton Altieri, who left in August. Altieri is now with KCNC/Channel 4, the CBS station in Denver.
Some Google searching reveals that Hawila was most recently at KCTV in Kansas City. According to the Kansas City Radio & TV blog, Hawila and his wife, Elisabeth Rentschler, both left the station, where he was a morning meteorologist and she was a lifestyle reporter (reached via Facebook, Hawila said that Rentschler does not yet have a DFW gig). Hawila was previously in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at WANE-TV.
According to their wedding website, Hawila and Rentschler met when he was the weekend meteorologist at WLFI-TV in Lafayette, Indiana, and she interviewed at the station. She was hired as the weekend anchor and worked alongside him. They eventually started dating, and when he got the Fort Wayne gig, two hours away from Lafayette, they would commute to see each other on weekends. They are newlyweds — really newlyweds: Their wedding was Oct. 8.
