At Sotheby's: a who's who of modern art

Star-Telegram Staff Writer

Roy Lichtenstein. Robert Rauschenberg. Larry Rivers. Keith Haring.

These are a few among the who's who of modern artists whose works, assembled over decades by the late Dallas developer Raymond Nasher, will be auctioned today at Sotheby's in New York.

Today's sale -- after Wednesday's session, where four works from the Nasher collection sold, including Picasso's Le Baiser for $17.4 million -- is devoted to a large cache of contemporary art from Nasher's overall holdings. Some highlights from the 133 items are Yellow Apple by Lichtenstein (expected price: $700,000-$900,000), an untitled painted jug by Haring (expected price: $100,000-$150,000) and Rush 3, a paper-and-fabric collage by Rauschenberg expected to fetch $300,000-$400,000.

"There is a bit of everything for everyone in this sale, and we expect it to do extremely well," said Robert Looker, vice president of Sotheby's private client group.

Sotheby's will complete the Nasher sale with two more auctions Wednesday and May 22.
