What's the secret to beautiful skin? Keep it simple, says Dr. Lori Stetler, a Dallas-based dermatologist. Here are her tips to get glowing skin without blowing your budget.
1. Wash up.
Sure, it seems like common sense. But admit it: sometimes you fall into bed without washing your face. That's one bad habit you really need to break. Makeup and your skin's natural oils can build up and clog your pores. Wash with a gentle cleanser every morning and evening.
Dr. Lori's pick: Cetaphil (available at drugstores)
My pick: Avalon Organic Lavender Facial Cleansing Milk (available at Whole Foods and drugstore.com)
2. Slather on the sunscreen.
According to Dr. Lori, 80% of aging is caused by what we do. And too much sun is one of the surest ways to wreak havoc on your skin. She advises wearing sunscreen 365 days a year. Because it's the cumulative effect that adds up over our lifetime. "It's not what you did last weekend," says Dr. Lori. "It's what you did for the last 40 weekends."
What to look for on the label: SPF 30 or above, broad spectrum, blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
Dr. Lori's pick: Neutrogena - it's sheer and not too heavy (available at drugstores)
My pick: Korres Watermelon Sunscreen Face Cream SPF 30 (available at Sephora)
3. Add antioxidants.
Sure, popping a vitamin pill every day is important. But loading up on extra Vitamin C or E isn't really going to help your skin. That's why Dr. Lori suggests an antioxidant serum. A topical serum that contains Vitamin C or Vitamin E will help build collagen and smooth fine lines.
Dr. Lori's pick: SkinCeuticals or Prevage - pricey but worth it (available in a dermatologist's office or spa)
My pick: Juice Organics Vitamin Antioxidant Facial Serum (available at Central Market, Ulta, Target)
Protect your skin with a light moisturizer. Look for one that fits your skin type. If you have oily skin, look for a non-comedogenic label. If you have dry skin, choose a thicker hydrating cream.
Dr. Lori's pick: Cetaphil, Neutrogena (both available at drugstores) or Clinique (available at department stores)
My pick: Origins (available at Origins or beauty.com) or Grassroots (available at Kohl's)
