A vacant apartment complex in southeast Dallas will be demolished following a fire early Friday that inflicted heavy damage, officials said.
The three-alarm fire was reported 3:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of Grand Avenue, a few blocks southwest of Fair Park where the State Fair of Texas begins today.
Fifty-six firefighters had the blaze tapped out in about two hours, said Lt. Joel Lavender, spokesman for Dallas Fire-Rescue.
"There was a lot of fire in the back," he said. "We've asked street services to demolish it because it is unsafe."
Investigators did not know the cause of the fire Friday morning, Lavender said.
"Neighbors said a transient population frequents those apartments," he said. "At this time fire investigators have not determined the cause, but that at least gives us a jumping off point."
