The best sunscreen under 10 bucks

Sadly, we've already suffered our first sun casualty of the summer.

Despite being slathered in sunscreen on a recent splash park outing, my daughter and I both ended up with a bad burn.

Determined not to let this happen again, I scoured the Environmental Working Group (EWG) list of the safest sunscreens. Much to my dismay, many of the best sunscreens fell into the category of "Seriously, you expect me to pay what for a 4-ounce bottle?"

Thankfully, after much perusing I found one that I hoped would work. My criteria: an overall EWG rating of 3 or less, widely available at a drugstore and reasonably priced.

The winner: Banana Boat Natural Reflect Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50.

Why I love it:

- It has a high SPF (SPF 50). However, it should still be reapplied about every 2 hours.

- It uses naturally sourced ingredients, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. (It does go on white and thick, so make sure you rub it in thoroughly.)

- It's water resistant. (There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen, despite what a label may claim.)

- It offers excellent UVA and UVB protection.

Pick up a bottle at Target or any drugstore for $8.99.
