Ace of Cakes: Itâ™s all about the Yellow Tag!

Let me preface this discussion with the following:  I am not a cake decorator – not at all. I am obsessed with “Ace of Cakes” and love to see all the intricate details and creativity they put it into it. So when I was asked to be the Mom2Mom Representative present at the launch of Kroger’s fourth annual “Bringing Hope to the Table” campaign, I was thrilled and equally as scared at the opportunity.

Each year, Kroger invites shoppers to help raise money for North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank to support programs for hungry North Texans by shopping yellow tagged-products that provide a percentage of sales to benefit the area food banks. (An easy way to provide assistance to the area food banks without taking any money out of your pocket!) To launch the event, the store invites members of the media to be paired with a Kroger pastry chef to decorate a cake using the campaign theme for title of “Ace of Cakes” and a $1000 donation in their name to the food banks.  I mean competing against the likes of CW’s Weather “Wondergirl” Becky Miller, WFAA’s Movie Mogul Gary Cogill and CBS 11’s “Top Traffic Reporter” Teresa Frosini among others – that’s a little much to stomach (much less frost!)

Armed with a couple bags of bright icing, a white sheet cake and 30 minutes to make some magic happen, I needed an idea that required less of my non-existing skills and somehow doesn’t look like my two year-old got after it. I decided using the yellow tag on my cake, might be the right thing to encapsulate the program. So with the help of my amazing pastry chef, I put together my cake…and believe me, looking around at the other cakes – there was no one I was going to be the winner.

Once the bell rang, the judges looked over our presentation; we awaited the announcement. In total surprise – I was named the “Ace of Cakes!” Believe me, not because it was pretty, but because I made sure to include the yellow tag on it because that is the most important part of the campaign... “bringing hope to the table.” By you just purchasing everyday products at your local Kroger store, you can be a winner by “Bringing Hope to the Table” for countless numbers of North Texans by putting food on their table.
