Review: Disney On Ice presents Let's Celebrate

What it’s about:
Disney On Ice presents Let’s Celebrate is an action-packed skating show featuring over 50 Disney characters. Classic characters such as Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck glide along with the Disney princesses, Aladdin and Buzz Lightyear. Viewers are treated to a year’s worth of celebrations, including a merry unbirthday party, a Halloween fright, a royal ball and a Hawaiian luau.

Why parents will like it: Yes, it’s a little saccharine (this is Disney after all), but the visual effects were stunning. I was awed by the fireworks and the glow-in-the-dark costumes during one elaborate scene. Plus, the skaters pull off impressive leaps and acrobatics. As a parent, I appreciated that the length of the show was just right, and bedtime wasn’t pushed too far back.

Why kids will like it: This show caters to the kids. Scenes are relatively short and feature lots of razzle dazzle with lights, music and theatrics. The characters invite audience participation: Even the little ones will love clapping and shouting along with the crowd.

Good to know:
If your young ones spook easily, you might want to duck out during the creepy Halloween scene. It features Jack Skellington and a montage of zombies and villains not exactly known for their charming personalities (think Captain Hook and the Evil Queen from Snow White). Another bit of advice: Arrive early. It’s hard to navigate to your seat in the dark — and very disruptive to those around you. We missed about 10 minutes of the show due to late arrivals who blocked our view.

Hit or miss:
Hit, if you can brave the crowds and escape without forking over a fortune for the over-priced concessions and Disney merchandise.
