ARLINGTON — Southlake Carroll is confident that it can score points in the playoffs.

What it wants to do more is create turnovers, and the team got off to a good start in that area Saturday night against Colleyville Heritage.

The Dragons intercepted three passes in the first half, turning them into 14 points, and finished with five in a 55-7 victory in a 5A Division II first-round game at Cowboys Stadium.

Tommy Avers rushed for 108 yards and three touchdowns, and David Piland threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns in less than three quarters, leaving with the Dragons ahead 45-0.

Colleyville Heritage used Jimmy Isbell at quarterback to start the game, but he was picked off twice. When Jeff Calvert took over, his first pass was intercepted.

Justin Agnew, Mitchell Osborne and Lincoln Schick made first-half interceptions for Carroll (10-1), which will meet Allen (10-1) at 8 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. Clay McMillan and Shaun Hoagland made interceptions in the second half.

Carroll coach Hal Wasson had a feeling his defense would play well. He said he saw a lot of aggressiveness in practice, which is a good start for producing turnovers.

"We’re emphasizing getting to the ball fast and with attitude," he said. "When you do that, good things can happen."

Carroll scored on its first drive, taking a field goal off the board after a running-into-the-kicker penalty put the ball at the 4 with fourth-and-goal, and Paul Stevenson ran it in.

Agnew intercepted for Carroll on the next play and returned it to the 9, and Avers scored from the 3 for a 14-0 lead with 7:47 left in the first quarter.

Carroll scored again as Brett Renger caught 35- and 25-yard passes to finish an 80-yard drive, and after another interception — by Osborne at the Colleyville Heritage 27 — the Dragons scored in two plays for a 28-0 lead on Ryan Gentry’s 26-yard catch and Avers’ 1-yard run.

Gentry added a 13-yard touchdown catch for a 35-0 lead before Cade Foster kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Carroll opened the second half with another touchdown drive, ending on Avers’ 3-yard run, his third touchdown, and Randy Williams scored in the fourth quarter.
