Area athletes could make strong run at state cross country mee

The UIL state meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock. Here’s a look at the area teams and runners.

5A boys

Keller Central: The Chargers clinched a spot in the state meet after a third-place run at the Region I meet. Team members are: seniors Nathan Parker, Alex Kimp and Tyler Beecham, juniors Justin Paul and Andrew Colby, sophomore Caullen Parker and freshman Aaron Rhodes.

Neal Smith, Southlake Carroll: Smith, a senior, qualified for state with a fourth-place run in the regional meet. He was 12th at last year’s state meet.

Jeff Arnier, Arlington Lamar: Last year, Arnier finished 18th at state. This year, Arnier looks to build on that after placing sixth at regionals.

John Valentine, Arlington Martin: Valentine finished eighth at the regional meet with a time of 15:45.

5A girls

Southlake Carroll: The Lady Dragons had a third-place finish at last year’s state meet. Carroll is led by senior Jessica Harper, who finished fifth at the Region I meet. Other members are: junior Paige Youngblood, sophomores Sarah Roe and Rachel Harper and freshmen Courtney Krieghauser, Kathryn Steele and Shelby Chapin.

Alyssa Nielson, Colleyville Heritage: Nielson finished second at last year’s state meet. The junior finished second at regionals, in 11:14.

Ashley Flores, Haltom: Flores, a senior, heads to state after a fourth-place run at regionals.

4A boys

Chuy Alegria, Saginaw Boswell: Alegria placed eighth at the Region I meet, in 16:04.

4A girls

Saginaw Boswell: The Lady Pioneers placed second last year. Boswell is led by sophomore Maggie Escobar, who won the Region I meet and finished second at state last year. Others are sophomore Cassandra Rosas and juniors Jennifer Atkinson, Courtney Ragle, Regina Germaine, Kelly Nahoolewa and Alex Osinga.

Kristyn and Kaitlyn Williams, Mansfield Timberview: Kristyn placed sixth at regionals, Kaitlyn was eighth.
