ARLINGTON — Arlington Bowie quarterback Deric Davis completed 22 of 31 passes for 408 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for another score, to lead the Volunteers to a 62-20 victory over Mansfield Summit on Thursday night at UT-Arlington’s Maverick Stadium.

"He’s been great all season," Bowie coach Kenny Perry said of Davis. "He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the whole area. He’s been doing this every week."

Bowie (8-2, 5-1 in District 4-5A) clinched at least a share of the district title. Arlington, which defeated Bowie earlier this season, has a 4-1 district mark heading into tonight’s regular-season finale against Mansfield. Bowie will find out its bi-district playoff opponent after tonight’s game.

With the loss, Summit (4-6, 3-3) was eliminated from playoff contention and Arlington Lamar clinched a berth. Arlington Martin must beat Lamar tonight for a berth.

Davis connected with Austin Whitaker to give the Volunteers an early lead. On Bowie’s first possession, Davis hooked up with Whitaker for a 16-yard gain to the Volunteers 47. Two plays later, Davis completed a deep pass over the middle to Whitaker, who cruised into the end zone from 45 yards out for a 7-0 lead.

The Jaguars responded with an 80-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard Nelson Akinwande run to tie the game at 7-7.

But the Jaguars couldn’t keep pace with the Volunteers, who scored on their first four possessions. Bowie scored on a 2-yard Davis run, a 60-yard Davis pass to Montra Nelson and Russell Hansbrough’s 19-yard run to lead 28-13 in the second quarter.

Davis was 11-of-17 passing for 206 yards in the first half, with Whitaker catching seven for 115 yards. Whitaker finished with nine catches for 142 yards.

Nelson finished with two catches for 109 yards. His second reception went for a 49-yard score in the third quarter.
