Mansfield Summit pulled off one of its most impressive accomplishments of the season last week.

Not only did the Jaguars defeat Arlington Martin 40-29, but they also did it with a shutout in the second half.

"If I would have known our defense would win the game for us, I could have let the offense stay in the locker room," first-year coach Travis Pride joked.

The Jaguars should be proud of the second-half shutout. Martin has one of the best offenses in District 4-5A, which boasts some of the best offenses in the area.

But the Jags were not a likely candidate for such a performance. They had given up 54 points the previous week to Arlington Sam Houston and 62 the week before to Arlington. Counting the first half against Martin, that was 145 points in 10 quarters.

"Our defense has been gradually growing. We’re real young over there," Pride said. "But they had a good week. They kind of came together. Shane Stephen, our defensive coordinator, has done a good job of getting those kids to believe."

The Jaguars forced four turnovers, which is something to be good at if the season extends past this week. Summit will make the playoffs with a victory against Arlington Bowie on Friday night. But Bowie will be another severe test for the Jags defenders.

"The kids have put themselves in position," Pride said. "It’s coming together at the right time. We’ll put it all out there."

Big 4

Three of the area’s most productive running backs had big games, even by their standards.

Blake Smith, Ja’Terian Douglas and Jonathan Gray combined for 867 yards and 12 touchdowns, and all three won, so all three have a chance to extend their seasons for their teams this week.

But they weren’t the only backs with a big night. Azle’s Jordan Beall hit the 300-yard mark against Springtown as the Hornets rallied for a 26-24 victory.

The rundown of the performances last week:

Player School Att. Yds. TD Ja’Terian Douglas Lamar 25 305 7 Jordan Beall Azle 36 300 2 Blake Smith Burleson 31 284 5 Jonathan Gray Aledo 31 278 5 Good experience Southlake Carroll quarterbacks David Piland and Kyle Williamson combined to throw three interceptions last week.

It almost cost the Dragons before they pulled out a 24-17 victory against Lewisville Hebron.

Turnovers are never good. But the Dragons at least learned something from the experience.

They worked on running out the clock, and not just on a blowout victory. The Dragons had to run out the final 4:08 while holding on to a one-possession lead.

"That was a positive twist on it at the end of the day," coach Hal Wasson said. "We were able to respond to adversity and run the clock out with our running game against a good defense."

The Dragons finish the District 5-5A schedule this week against Lewisville, but they clinched first place by beating Hebron.
