SAGINAW — Earlier this season, Saginaw Boswell seniors Quinton Gregory and Dante Lipscomb made it a point to get back to the playoffs.

Neither enjoyed Boswell’s first-round exit to Denton Guyer last year.

The Pioneers are headed back to the postseason, thanks in large part to Gregory and Lipscomb. Both played key roles in lifting Boswell to a 41-21 victory over Saginaw on Friday night at Rough Rider Stadium.

Gregory finished with 186 passing yards, including three touchdown passes, and 118 rushing yards, including a rushing TD. Lipscomb had 140 rushing yards on 12 carries, including an 80-yard TD run, and 90 receiving yards, including a TD catch.

Boswell (6-3, 4-2 District 6-4A) locked up the third seed in the district. Saginaw (4-5, 3-3) also learned it earned a playoff berth for the first time under coach Chris Wilde. The Rough Riders will be the fourth seed after Springtown lost to Azle and White Settlement Brewer fell to Birdville.

Boswell built a 14-0 halftime lead, but Saginaw came out strong in the second half. On the first drive, Rough Riders senior defensive end Eric Henderson intercepted a pass, setting up a seven-play, 54-yard scoring drive. Saginaw scored on a 15-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Henry Munoz to senior wide receiver Logan Sumpter.

On the ensuing drive, though, Boswell marched 69 yards and regained a 14-point lead. The Pioneers took a 21-7 lead when Gregory hooked up with Lipscomb on a 16-yard catch-and-run.

Saginaw cut it to a seven-point deficit again late in the third when junior running back TeCory Smith’s three-yard TD run capped a 13-play, 71-yard scoring drive.

Boswell pulled away for good, however, on the next drive. The key play — again — involved Gregory and Lipscomb.

Facing a third-and-13 from the Boswell 44, Gregory escaped pressure in the backfield and connected with Gregory down the seam for a 41-yard gain and a first down. Three plays later, Boswell took a 28-14 lead when junior wide receiver Jacob Stone grabbed a 14-yard fade pass from Gregory in the end zone.

Boswell cushioned its lead with two more touchdowns in the fourth.

Junior defensive back Caden MacNeill had a 41-yard interception return and Gregory added a 33-yard TD run to make it appear like a blowout on the scoreboard.
