WHITE SETTLEMENT — It took Birdville’s high-octane offense a little while to warm up on a brisk Friday evening at Bears Stadium. Once it fell into a rhythm, though, it was toward the end zone as usual for the still-undefeated Hawks.
Birdville quarterback Josh Dorman, who came in as the leading passer among 4A area quarterbacks with 2,963 yards and 39 touchdowns, threw for 289 yards and four scores in its 50-28 win over White Settlement Brewer. Two of those scores went to Cory Hines, who had 114 yards receiving. The win sets up a showdown in North Richland Hills on Thursday when Aledo, the No. 1 4A team in the Star-Telegram rankings and one back of the Hawks in the loss column, visits No. 2 Birdville (9-0, 6-0 District 6-4A) for the district championship. Brewer quarterback Jake Glover, right below Dorman in terms of passing yards with 2,483, ended his last home game, along with 24 other Bears seniors, with 402 yards passing on 37 of 55 completions. A gritty effort from Brewer’s defense forced three turnovers in the loss. In what was thought to be, and somewhat became, a shootout, there was only one touchdown scored in the first quarter. It came on Birdville’s second drive with 55.5 seconds left on a 9-yard pass from Dorman to Landry Peek.Brewer’s Trey Bagsby hauled in a 9-yard TD pass from Glover early in the second quarter to tie it at 7-7. Brewer’s Adam Kaczmarski forced a Birdville fumble on the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by A.J. Morrow at the Hawks’ 37. Two plays later Glover heaved a 37-yard strike to Tyler Morse to give the Bears (3-6, 2-4) a 14-7 lead.Hines caught his first TD five plays into Birdville’s next drive to tie the game. After a fourth-down stop by the Hawks’ defense deep in their territory, Clark Renfro scored from 41 yards. There were 36 combined points in the third quarter, including 22 by Birdville as John Alvarez, who ran for 194 yards on 24 carries, scored from 26 yards after a 49-yard run.
