ARLINGTON — On a night when Dallas Cowboys running back Tashard Choice was in attendance, Arlington Bowie and Arlington Sam Houston supplied a dazzling display of big-play offense.
Deric Davis led the offensive onslaught, passing for 387 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Volunteers to a 56-44 victory against the Texans in a District 4-5A game at Wilemon Field. Bowie (7-2) pulled even with Arlington atop the district standings at 4-1 and clinched a playoff berth. Choice, the Cowboys running back, served as a ceremonial captain for Sam Houston during the pregame coin toss. The Volunteers had 591 yards and 28 first downs. The Texans (3-7, 1-4) countered with 575 yards and 26 first downs. Sam Houston quarterback Jamal Turner passed for 351 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Texans, who trailed 35-21 at halftime. Sam Houston rallied in the second half. Turner’s 4-yard run early in the fourth quarter cut Bowie’s lead to 49-44. But Davis answered Turner’s run with a 17-yard touchdown run to increase Bowie’s lead to 12 points. Davis passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns in the first half as the Volunteers rallied from a 21-14 deficit to take a 35-21 lead. Bowie trailed 21-14 but scored on its next three possessions.Cameron White caught touchdown passes of 61 and 8 yards. Russell Hansbrough’s 1-yard run with 31 seconds left in the second quarter gave the Volunteers a 14-point halftime advantage.
