Frito-Lay has come to the rescue of those who love salty snacks but should be watching their sodium consumption. The new Pinch of Salt line of chips -- Lay's, Ruffles, Tostitos and Fritos -- cuts the salt by more than 30 percent to 50 percent of their original counterparts.
Most of our tasters were surprised that they liked the low-salt chips better. We tasted the Pinch of Salt Ruffles (75 grams of sodium per ounce) against regular Ruffles (160 grams of sodium per ounce). Tasters' comments about Pinch of Salt chips included, "potato flavor actually seems to come through more strongly" and "just enough salt not to overpower the chip."
Suggested retail price is $2.29 for 6.25- to 8-ounce packages.
