Repurpose an old wool sweater or two into stunning bracelets, necklaces and more by felting the fabric — shrinking the wool until it’s thick and ravel-proof. To do so, wash the sweaters in hot water and dry them on high heat. Repeat, if necessary, so that the fabric’s weave is tight enough to be cut without fraying.
Here are four fun fashion projects to try with felted wool. Note: Your child may need help with the sewing. Off-the-cuff braceletsCreating a bevy of these bracelets is a cinch. First, felt an old sweater (see instructions above), then cut loops from the cuffs and arms. Next, decorate the bangles by using embroidery floss to sew on buttons, felt shapes, paper flowers and more. Tip: If the diameter of a loop is too big, cut it open, trim the excess length, then overlap the edges and secure them by sewing on embellishments.Nifty necklacesSmall pieces of felted wool can have a big impact when they’re turned into beautiful jewelry. To make a necklace, poke or cut pairs of holes in the center of a felt shape or shapes, as well as any other embellishments, such as paper flowers. Thread leather cording through the slits, then tie the cording or add a jewelry clasp.Terrific toteA plain bag pops with pizzazz when you add decorative details. Cut butterflies and hearts from the felted wool (you can find templates at FamilyFun.com/magazine). With embroidery floss, use a running stitch to sew the pieces to the bag as shown, then continue the stitching to make antennae. If needed, add a dot of fabric glue to the back of the wings and press them onto the bag to keep them from flopping.Pretty ponytailsTransform an elastic hair band into a one-of-a-kind accessory. Layer several felt circles and a button, then stitch them together with embroidery floss. Tie the floss tightly around the hair band to secure.
