Artful Jewelry: Craft and Wear Your Own

Masterpieces

By Jo Packham

Chronicle Books, $19.99

Ages: 10 and up

Author Jo Packham springboards off 11 great works of art from history, from an Egyptian papyrus image to a Gustav Klimt art nouveau painting. Each work inspires Packham to design a piece of modern jewelry that kids can craft. Projects include paper-clip bracelets (inspired by medieval chain mail), delicate beaded earrings (reminiscent of a Botticelli painting), a paper-bead necklace (in a Renaissance style) and a tulle ring (taking its cue from a painting by Edgar Degas, of course). The projects are all pretty and sure to appeal to crafty kids. Some materials, such as embroidery floss, earring hooks and beads, are included in the kit (for example, you could make the Botticelli earrings using the enclosed supplies). Other projects will require a trip to the craft store. Each project also includes a page describing the artist and his work. This would be a fabulous gift for an artsy child, providing weekends’ worth of fun.
