Who can turn wooden skewers, foam board, chopsticks and cotton balls into wearable pieces of art?

The six winners of the mom2momdfw.com/Good Morning Texas Homemade Halloween Contest! For their efforts, they will receive a mom2mom prize package and appear on this morning’s Good Morning Texas show. The winners:

Shannon Schmid, Arlington

Costume: Chinese takeout box

Model: Molly Schmid, 14 months

The inspiration: Schmid says she and her husband wanted an out-of-the-box costume idea for their daughter’s first Halloween. "On Friday night, we usually order Chinese takeout, and we were looking at the boxes and thought, 'That’s it,’ " she said.

Nice touch: Schmid hand painted the takeout design on the cardboard box.

Cost: About $2 (not including the takeout food)

Tabitha Brotherton, Park Glen

Costume: Porcupine

Model: Kyler Brotherton, 9

The inspiration: Since preschool, Kyler has come up with costume ideas, which his mom makes from scratch. After seeing the movie Open Season, Kyler wanted to be Buddy the Porcupine. His mom’s reaction: "How in the world am I going to do it?"

Nice touch: She used sweat pants for the base, wooden skewers for the quills and stuffed the inside with cotton and plastic foam.

Cost: About $50

Meredith Whitley, Fort Worth

Costume: Cotton candy

Model: Mae, 2  1/2

The inspiration: Whitley’s pastry-chef experience inspired her to come up with a culinary concoction and "what better way to dress up a sweet little girl than to dress her up as sugar."

Nice touch: She used pink spray paint on white batting to get the cotton effect.

Cost: About $10

Joshua Jones, Rockwall

Costume: Three French hens

Models: Finn, Ainslee and Anne-Claire, all 5

The inspiration: With triplets, Jones, naturally, was thinking of things that come in threes. "For some reason, three French hens stuck in my mind," he said.

Nice touch: He ironed on French phrases such as "C’est la vie" to each costume.

Cost: $75 for all three costumes

Starla Gilbert, Justin

Costume: Aquarium

Model: James, 11

The inspiration: Gilbert saw Lost actor Jorge Garcia wearing a fish tank costume on The Bonnie Hunt Show last year, which inspired her to create one for her son — minus the shower curtain.

Nice touch: The fish in the tank are cat toys.

Cost: About $25

Megan Hetherington-Back and Sean Back, Benbrook

Costume: U.S. Air Force jet

Model: Aden Back, 4

The inspiration: Inspired by his dad’s love of aviation, Aden decided that he wanted to be a pilot. It took his parents 38 days to complete the costume, which weighs 10 pounds.

Nice touch: They used remote-control accessories to make the plane’s navigation, landing and tail lights work.

Cost: $250
