TCM honors Asians on film
Race and Hollywood: Asian Images in Film: This is the umbrella title for Turner Classic Movies' monthlong look at how Asians are depicted on film, with each Tuesday and Thursday evening in June devoted to the subject. Night one goes way, waaaay back to the silent era -- an 1899 short, Filipinos Retreat From Trenches, is scheduled to be included. Things begin with a repeat of the documentary The Slanted Screen; five features follow, including the 1919 classic Broken Blossoms and 1933's then-controversial sound film, The Bitter Tea of General Yen.
