Fort Worth’s favorite fried pies have gone south.
But not far south.
Mindy Lu’s Pies has moved to a shop in south Arlington.
When Mindy Lu’s opened 30 years ago on Loop 820 in east Fort Worth, the Mayer family’s daughter was 15. Now, Mindy Lu Ellis and her husband have four children, and Arlington is closer to Mansfield and home.
Mindy Lu’s new shop is at 4031 Express St., on U.S. 287 near Russell Curry Road.
The pies come in 10 flavors, including fruit pies, plus chocolate and coconut and strawberry cheesecake.
The shop is open 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays and 7 a.m.-10 a.m. Fridays. It’s closed weekends; 817-563-7437, www.mindylupies.com.
If you want to compare fried pies, another favorite is Hutch’s Pie and Sandwich Shop, 145 College Park Drive off Main Street in Weatherford.
It’s open 6 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturdays. Ask about the afternoon special; 817-594-0751, www.hutchspies.com.
The granddaddy of fried pie shops is the Fried Pie Co. & Restaurant, 202 W. Main St. in Gainesville, open weekdays and Saturdays; shopgainesvilletexas.com/thefriedpie.htm.
Thanks to Dutch’s and several other burger cafes, we have discovered the glory of the mini-burgers called sliders.
Now, sushi cafes have their own sliders.
Tokyo Cafe in Fort Worth serves ahi tuna sliders as part of a flashy updated menu.
It has a new look, too: 5121 Pershing Ave., 817-737-8568.
A new chain in north Fort Worth has an odd "special."
The lunch pork rib plate at Buffalo Wings & Rings on Western Center Boulevard costs $9.99 for two ribs? A $12 dinner has three ribs.
(Nearby at Texas Pit BBQ in Saginaw, you get four ribs at lunch for $8.25 and five to seven at dinner for $9.99.)
Buffalo Wings & Rings is mainly about wings; 2730 Western Center Blvd., 682-286-0444, buffalowingsandrings.com.
A Southern chicken chain is opening in Keller: Zaxby’s.
Zaxby’s is a Georgia company, serving regular or Buffalo tenders with "Zax sauce."

The Pour House Sports Grill in downtown Fort Worth celebrates 13 years Friday night.
It also may be the Pour House’s last anniversary in its location. Owner Eric Tschetter says he’s considering a move to Montgomery Plaza; for now, it’s at 209 W. Fifth St.; 817-335-2575, www.pour-house.com.
And there’s good news on Camp Bowie Boulevard.
A sign on a former chicken shop at 5701 Lovell Ave. at Camp Bowie says the heralded Mama Lou’s Country Kitchen is coming back. No word on an opening date.
