The huge lake is on the Texas-Louisiana border. The aerial spraying of giant salvinia is scheduled to begin today and could last about a week. State biologist Howard Elder says 2,000 acres stretching over 16 miles of the reservoir are affected. Some coves are 100 percent clogged. It may take up to four weeks to see the results of the treatment, Elder said.— The Associated Press Raid smashes auto theft ringEL PASO — Authorities raided a warehouse this week and broke up an El Paso auto theft ring with ties to a Mexican drug cartel, police said. Thirteen people were arrested Thursday after local, state and federal authorities raided the warehouse, being used to strip parts off stolen cars. The ringleader answered to two fugitives in Ciudad Juarez, just across the Rio Grande from El Paso. Police said the two are members of La Linea, a cell of the Juarez drug cartel. At least 10 people arrested Thursday also face federal drug charges for their roles in the ring, thought to be responsible for millions of dollars in auto thefts over at least the last year. — The Associated PressMan is jailed in state school deathLUBBOCK — A man accused in the death of a Lubbock State School resident surrendered to authorities and was in the Lubbock County Jail on Friday night. Doneil Smith, 38, was indicted on a manslaughter charge last month. A coroner ruled that school resident Michael Nicholson was suffocated during a struggle. The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported that agency documents indicate that Smith restrained Nicholson by sitting on him. Six state school workers, including Smith, were fired. The school is now called the Lubbock State Supported Living Center. — The Associated Press
