Shoot yourself in the leg, get almost 20 years in prison.
That was the outcome for a convicted felon who accidentally shot himself last year and was sentenced this week in federal court.
In April 2007, Fort Worth police responded to a shooting on West Hammond Street. They found Edward Garcia, 41, bleeding from a wound to his inner thigh. They also found a loaded .22-caliber pistol.
An officer asked what happened, and Garcia replied that it was "obvious" he was putting the gun in his waistband and it went off.
Authorities learned he had several convictions for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in the 1980s. Because of the accidental shooting, he was convicted of being a felon in possession of a gun and sentenced as an armed career criminal.
He received 19 years and seven months in prison.
