Tarleton fined over crime statistics reporting

The U.S. Education Department confirmed Thursday that it has fined Tarleton State University $137,500 for failing to accurately report campus crime statistics. University spokeswoman Liza Benedict said Tarleton State, in Stephenville, would appeal the fine. Federal law requires colleges and universities to disclose information about campus crime and security policies in a timely manner. The federal inquiry came after stories in the Tarleton State campus newspaper, The J-TAC.
