Why TCU won
The offense, which sputtered out of the gate early in the season, came out blazing for the third consecutive game, scoring on five of TCU’s first six possessions to take a 31-6 halftime lead. The defense, without two starters in the secondary, intercepted San Diego State twice and held the Aztecs to 279 yards, including 187 yards passing, nearly 100 below their average. The Big Five1Priest streak snapped: Rafael Priest, who had started 47 consecutive games at cornerback, did not play Saturday because of an ankle injury. Priest had started every game of his career, dating back to his redshirt freshman year in 2006. Priest was tied for the nation’s second-longest active streak of consecutive starts. 2Record-breaking offense: This TCU offense is on a pace to gain more yards than any previous Gary Patterson unit, and it appears to still be improving. For the second consecutive game, the Frogs gained more than 500 yards, and outscored their last four opponents 178-25. 3Another game, another way: As if the TCU offense doesn’t have enough weapons, the Frogs unveiled another dimension of their arsenal: tight end Evan Frosch. Frosch’s 15-yard reception — his first of the season — on fourth-and-2 early in the second quarter set up Andy Dalton’s 7-yard TD run on the next play.4Henry in the house: PGA golfer and TCU Hall of Famer J.J. Henry was on the sidelines at Qualcomm Stadium. He also watched the Frogs play at Clemson and at BYU this year.5Postgame excitement: It wasn’t their dominating victory, or their 9-0 start that the Frogs’ players were hooping and hollering about in the locker room after Saturday’s win. They were excited about seeing a specially designed Nike uniform that they’ll be wearing for the first time against Utah on Saturday. The new uniform will be unveiled Tuesday. Game ballsWR Ryan Christian: The senior caught three passes for a career-high 106 yards, including TD receptions of 44 and 29 yards.Running backs: Matthew Tucker, Ed Wesley and Joseph Turner took turns punishing the Aztecs’ defense as all three averaged 4.7 yards per carry or better and each scored a touchdown. Even QB Andy Dalton had 44 yards rushing and two TDs on five carries.SS Tyler Luttrell/CB Greg McCoy: The replacements for Colin Jones and Rafael Priest had four tackles and nabbed an interception.
