Texas safety Earl Thomas has been selected as one of 12 semifinalists for the 2009 Jim Thorpe Award, honoring the nation’s top defensive back.

Other semifinalists from Big 12 schools are Oklahoma State cornerback Perrish Cox and Kansas safety Darrell Stuckey.

Thomas, a sophomore, has intercepted six passes this season, returning two for touchdowns.

The Longhorns’ Michael Huff (2005) and cornerback Aaron Ross (2006) are past winners.

Women’s basketball: Connecticut’s Maya Moore became just the seventh unanimous choice on The Associated Press’ preseason All-America women’s basketball team, garnering all 40 votes from a national media panel. Moore was joined on the preseason squad by teammate Tina Charles, Stanford’s Jayne Appel, Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender, and Virginia’s Monica Wright.

Big 12 bowls: Big 12 officials announced bowl agreements with the Dallas Football Classic and the Eagle Bank Bowl, effective in 2010. The Big 12 will send a team to the Dallas Football Classic, a start-up game to be played in the Cotton Bowl, for the 2010 and 2012 seasons. The Big 12 also will send a team to the Eagle Bank Bowl in Washington, D.C., in 2013.

Florida State football: Longtime Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said he will retire at the end of the season after 26 years as one of Bobby Bowden’s assistants.
