NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones has won Big 12 player of the week honors for the second time in his five starts.
"Hopefully some young receivers in high school are looking at that," coach Bob Stoops said. The Sooners currently have three commitments from wide receivers for 2010, but presumably have room for more."We’re really proud of Landry," Stoops said. "He’s doing a good job and the guys around him supported him well [against Kansas State]."We ran the ball better, the protection was better, and the guys caught the ball better and made plays when they were there."Jones’ 17 touchdown passes far outdistance any other freshman quarterback in the nation. The next two are tied with 11 each.Jones said the fact that the same offensive line starters have been in place for two games cannot be overlooked in the recent overall development of the offense through the last game and a half."Just getting those guys working together as a unit, getting them familiar with each other is one of the bigger things we’ve got going right now," he said.Open for debateBob Stoops was asked a question Tuesday about the importance of experience and the fact that despite the lack of same in the offensive line that offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson nevertheless expressed confidence in this group back in August."A lot more so than I did," Stoops said. "You never heard me that way. To me, there is no substitute for experience."Wilson offered this in rebuttal: "I’ve never heard too many coaches come up and say their guys sucked. You guys never played cards? You watch that 'Texas hold ’em’ deal where sometimes you bluff a little bit, too?"Those guys, the only problem I have is that those guys are more talented than they have played. They’re gaining on it. But their talent level does not match their performance."Big vs. BigThe key matchups for OU-Nebraska will be up front, both offensive lines facing big tasks in dealing with defensive front fours that arguably are the best in the Big 12, with Texas a close third."The defensive fronts are very good with strong players up there that are talented and play physical games," Bob Stoops said. "It will be exciting to watch."Injury updateOffensive guard Brian Simmons remains sidelined with a knee injury for another week or two, Bob Stoops said. The status of receiver Brandon Caleb (ankle) is day-to-day.'D’ was OKDefensive coordinator Brent Venables was overall complimentary in his overview of the way the defense played against K-State."I felt there was a good portion where we played good," he said. "But we played really poorly at some inopportune times. We weren’t as sharp as we’ve been on third down."The positive is these are all easily correctable things. I was really glad our guys applied some concepts. There were some things they hadn’t practiced against that they did defend awfully well."Bob Stoops observed, "To think we’re going to shut everybody out every game, I don’t think is very realistic."ONLINE: soonersports.comMike Jones, 817-390-7760
