ARLINGTON — School trustees just got the voters’ OK Tuesday for a $197.5 million bond issue, and by Thursday, one community organization was suggesting a name for the new elementary school included in the package.

Trustees should consider honoring civil rights activist and labor leader Cesar Chavez when it names the school to be built in east-central Arlington, Luis Castillo, president of Arlington Council 4353 of the League of the United Latin American Citizens, said in a news release.

"To honor Cesar Chavez in a predominantly Hispanic . . . part of the school district is the right thing to do," said Castillo, a former school board candidate. ". . .we jubilantly look forward to the grand opening of the Cesar Chavez Elementary School."

Castillo said the LULAC Council would make a formal request to the board soon.
