Motorcycle rider found dead in ditch

GRAND PRAIRIE — A 29-year-old motorcyclist died Wednesday when he was thrown into a ditch at Cottonwood Creek, authorities said. The incident occurred overnight in the 1400 block of South Carrier Parkway. Police were alerted about 7:55 a.m. when a meter reader saw the body. Investigators determined that Eric Shiller, 29, of Arlington, was riding a 2006 Honda south on Carrier at a high speed when he failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, striking a culvert. The motorcycle vaulted into the south fork of Cottonwood Creek and sank. Investigators believe the crash occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Nearby residents told investigators that they heard a crash but did not see anything. This is the 12th traffic fatality in Grand Prairie this year. — Staff report

Man, 26, arrested in Halloween sweep

A 26-year-old Fort Worth man was one of four sex offenders arrested statewide for parole violations on Halloween. James Joseph Reed III was arrested Monday for failing to comply with parole restrictions requiring that he remain at his residence on Halloween night. The fugitive unit with the attorney general’s office arrested Reed at his home after a warrant was issued, according to a news release. Reed was sentenced to four years in the Texas Youth Commission for indecency with a child by sexual contact. The victim was a 10-year-old girl. All four arrests were made during Operation Safe Halloween, a crackdown that targeted sex offenders whose parole conditions required them to avoid young trick-or-treaters on Halloween. — Mitch Mitchell
