The Plaza Theatre’s current production of Beau Jest "..is one of our best," said director, G. Aaron Siler. The production is part of a very successful season which has given local community theater buffs such plays as Aida, Don’t Drink the Water and The Music Man.
The comedy, written by James Sherman, was first produced in England in 1989 and had it’s United States debut in New York City in 1991.This three-act is fast-paced, dropping the audience into the action within the first few minutes of the first act. Sarah Goldman’s (Camille Shaw) parents, Abe (Jay Cornils) and Miriam (Darcy Farrington) have always dreamed of their daughter marrying a nice, Jewish boy – preferably a doctor. However, Sarah has fallen for Chris, a gentile. Unwilling to disappoint her folks, she has invented an imaginary boyfriend, David Steinberg M.D., who her family desperately wants to meet. For the first meeting, Sarah hires Bob (JaceSon Barrus) from an escort service to play the part of her perfect beau. She quickly discovers that, contrary to her request, he is not Jewish. In fact, the closest he’s come to the religion is a part he once played in Fiddler on the Roof.Over the three acts, the characters learn a great deal about the Goldman family. "As the play starts many may think that this story focuses around Judaism," said Siler. "I believe that this show is much more about family relationships between children and parents, brother and sister, husband and wife, and the different dynamics between all of them." Beau Jest plays through Nov. 14th with Sander’s Family Christmas opening Nov. 19th.
