A 27-pound blue catfish may not raise many eyebrows in Texas, but one that size is a real whopper in West Virginia.
Chad Bright of Henderson, W.Va., caught a 27.2-pound blue catfish May 5 in Krodel Lake near his home to set a West Virginia state record. Bright’s catfish, caught on a live crayfish, was 36.85 inches long and beat the 2005 state record of 24.37 pounds.
Something that may be interesting to anglers: Krodel Lake covers only 22 surface acres, has a maximum depth of 10 feet and was built in 1948.
The Texas record blue catfish weighed 121.50 pounds, measured 58 inches in length and was caught by Cody Mullenix at Lake Texoma on Jan. 16, 2004. Texoma covers 74,686 surface acres, has a maximum depth of 100 feet and was impounded in 1944.
