Man dies after being struck by car in east Fort Worth

A man believed to be homeless died late Tuesday at a Fort Worth hospital after he was struck by a car in east Fort Worth, police said.

The 49-year-old man was struck at 7:30 p.m. by a silver Dodge Neon in the 3400 block of East Belknap Street, said Sgt. Rodney Bangs, supervisor of the traffic investigation unit.

The man apparently stepped in front of the car that was driven by a 35-year-old woman who had her 5-year-old son with her, the reports stated.

The man was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he later died from extensive head injuries, according to reports.

"We don't anticipate any charges at this time," Bangs said. "The pedestrian apparently walked in front of the vehicle. He wasn't in a crosswalk; he was crossing mid-block, and in those circumstances, pedestrians are required to yield to vehicles."

Officers have tentatively identified the man, but his name was unavailable early Wednesday because his family hadn't been notified, Bangs said.

His home address was listed as a night shelter, "so there is a chance he was homeless," Bangs said.
