It was a mad dash for cash Wednesday in San Antonio when a suspect in a police chase dumped a box of bills -- thousands of them -- onto a busy freeway, according to a news report.
The San Antonio Express-News reported that the cash flurry occurred during the afternoon rush hour as police chased the driver, who threw an estimated $100,000 onto Loop 410 East, near the U.S. 281 exit.
Drivers stopped their vehicles and began grasping for the money, San Antonio police Sgt. Gabe Trevino told the newspaper.
"There was a cloud of cash," he told the newspaper. "People were stuffing it into their pockets."
Another officer said he saw a school bus driver stop to grab some bills. The officer added that he, too, was trying to grab the loose cash, but his aim was to turn it over to police.
Trevino also told the "Express-News" that anyone who keeps the money is in possession of evidence in a federal crime, which is illegal.
Police worked to collect the cash and keep traffic flowing.
Meanwhile, agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration caught the suspect, whose name was not released, after the car he was in collided with two other vehicles, the newspaper reported.
No one was hurt in the collision, police said.
