This was not a good year for home foreclosures in the four-county North Texas region, as filings hit a record high.

Postings for the Dec. 1 auction pushed this year’s foreclosure filings to 61,676, a 23 percent jump from 50,324 in 2008, said George Roddy Sr., president of Addison-based Foreclosure Listing Service.

"During the fourth quarter alone, 17,000 homes were posted for foreclosure in the Metroplex," he said Thursday.

Tarrant County had 20,170 filings, up 27 percent over 2008.

"This is the highest I have seen since we began tracking foreclosure posting activity in this county," Roddy said.

The number of monthly filings in North Texas and in Tarrant County peaked in July.

That month, Tarrant County foreclosures hit 2,015, up 66 percent from a year earlier and up 23 percent from the previous month.

After falling sharply in August, Tarrant foreclosures climbed again in September and October before falling 8 percent in November and falling another 4 percent in December, to 1,746.

Still, December’s filings are up 32 percent from a year earlier.

In Dallas County, 26,550 homes were posted for foreclosure in 2009, up 17 percent from 2008. Collin County figures reached 8,193, up 32 percent, and Denton County filings jumped 24 percent from last year, to 6,763 filings in 2009.

Not all of the postings are new. The figures include "repostings." Those can include foreclosures that were not completed at the scheduled auction and were refiled for the next auction, or cases in which the lender and homeowner worked out a temporary agreement and the property was removed from auction, but later reposted.

In Tarrant County for December, 899 filings are repostings, meaning that 847 are new cases. That’s still a 5 percent increase from the number of new postings for December 2008.

Of the 5,253 filings in the metro area, 2,583 are repostings, or 49 percent. The number of new postings is a 6 percent increase from December a year ago, figures show.
