Sunday's South Regional Games

No. 2 Texas (29-6) vs. No. 7 Miami (Fla.) (23-10)

11:15 a.m., Little Rock, Ark.

The 411: The Hurricanes, who have won eight of their last 11, last reached the Sweet 16 in 2000 (the South Regional in Austin). Miami coach Frank Haith was an assistant coach with the Longhorns before taking the Miami job. He’s in his fourth season with the Hurricanes. The strategy: Texas needs to make sure that Miami’s Jack McClinton doesn’t get 32 points in a half like he did against Saint Mary’s in the first round. A junior guard, McClinton is an outstanding long-range shooter. The Longhorns need to dominate the boards to make sure Miami doesn’t get second-shot opportunities.

The key players: Texas’ D.J. Augustin vs. Miami’s Lance Hurdle. Augustin did a nice job running the offense and finding A.J. Abrams (26 points in the first-round victory). Hurdle took over Miami’s point guard duties halfway through the season and has been a steadying influence.

No. 8 Mississippi State (23-10) vs. No. 1 Memphis (34-1)

3:45 p.m., Little Rock, Ark.

The 411: Memphis is trying to reach a regional final for the third consecutive season while the Bulldogs haven’t made it to the second weekend since the 1996 team reached the Final Four.

The strategy: This game has upset potential because the Bulldogs have talent and mental toughness. Charles Rhodes had a career-high 34 in the first-round victory but Mississippi State also can get offense from Jamont Gordon, Ben Hansbrough and Barry Stewart. Jarvas Varnado, the nation’s top shot blocker, needs to limit Memphis’ inconsistent inside game. Oregon was nine-of-38 on 3-point shots in its loss to the Bulldogs. If Memphis settles for the outside shot, the Tigers could be in trouble.

The key players: Mississippi State’s Jarvas Varnado vs. Memphis Joey Dorsey. Varnardo doesn’t score much but he averages nearly eight rebounds and five blocked shots per game. Dorsey had three points and nine rebounds against UT-Arlington. He needs to produce.
