Friday's Midwest Regional games

    No. 10 Davidson (28-6) vs. No. 3 Wisconsin (31-4)

    6:10 p.m., Detroit

The 411: Davidson last got this far in the NCAA Tournament in 1969, when Lefty Driesell was the coach. The Wildcats lost to North Carolina. Wisconsin made the Elite Eight in 2005. The Badgers lost to North Carolina.

The strategy: Wisconsin often uses its offense as its defense. The Badgers patiently work for good shots. That reduces the number of possessions in each game. The Badgers also are fundamentally sound on defense. Both factors should prove important in trying to slow Davidson’s Stephen Curry. He’s averaging 35 points in the Wildcats’ two NCAA Tournament victories. Davidson will need to keep Wisconsin’s front court players off the offensive boards.

The key matchup: Davidson’s Stephen Curry vs. Wisconsin’s Michael Flowers. The hottest player (Curry) in the NCAA Tournament matches moves with one of the nation’s best defensive players (Flowers).

Davidson stat line: Senior point guard Jason Richards is the only player in school history with over 1,000 career points and over 600 career assists.

Wisconsin stat line: The Badgers’ two NCAA opponents averaged 55.5 points and shot 37.8 percent. Both Cal State-Fullerton and Kansas State scored season lows in their losses.

    No. 12 Villanova (22-12) vs. No. 1 Kansas (33-3)

    9:40 p.m., Detroit

The 411: Villanova is in the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four years. Kansas has been to a regional final twice since last reaching the Final Four in 2003. The strategy: Both teams prefer a fast tempo. If Villanova and get out on the break and drain some 3-pointers, it can put some game pressure on the Jayhawks. Kansas has an edge inside and should be able to exploit that when the game is in half-court mode. If the Wildcats can shoot 50 percent from the field, they’ve got a chance to keep it close.

The key matchup: Villanova’s front court vs. Kansas’ front court. If the Wildcats’ bigs can keep the Jayhawks’ bigs from dominating the lane and the boards, Villanova will have a chance to keep the game close.

Villanova stat line: Over the last 13 games (9-4 record), the Wildcats have held their opponents to 40.2 percent shooting and 30.8 percent from 3-point range.

Kansas stat line: In two NCAA Tournament games, the Jayhawks are 55.9 percent from the field, 44.7 percent on 3-pointers and 55.9 percent from the free throw line.
