Sunday's Midwest Regional Games

    No. 13 Siena (23-10) vs. No. 12 Villanova (21-12)

    11:10 a.m., Tampa, Fla.

The 411: The only other time Siena reached the second round was its first NCAA Tournament in 1989. The Saints lost to Minnesota, 80-67. Villanova reached the Sweet 16 in 2005 and 2006.

The strategy: Guard play will be critical. Siena has Kenny Hasbrouck, a 6-3 junior, is powerful. He is adept at getting his shot and has an outstanding mid-range game. Tay Fisher gives the Saints instant offense off the bench. Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds (sophomore) and Corey Fisher (freshman) are the back court producers for the Wildcats. If the guard play evens out, Villanova’s slight edge up front could make the difference.

The key players: Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds vs. Siena’s Kenny Hasbrouck. Reynolds is Villanova’s point guard while Hasbrouck is a shooting guard. But they’re the offensive fulcrums for their teams. If Reynolds scores 15 to 20, figure the Wildcats to win; if Hasbrouck gets 20 to 25, the Saints could advance.

    No. 10 Davidson (27-6) vs. No. 2 Georgetown (28-5)

    1:50 p.m., Raleigh, N.C.

The 411: Davidson is trying to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 1969. That year, the Wildcats defeated Villanova and St. John’s (future Big East Conference) teams. Georgetown reached the Sweet 16 each of the last two years.

The strategy: For Georgetown, it’s guarding Stephen Curry. Davidson’s sophomore guard had 40 in the first-round defeat of Gonzaga. He can score off the drive or the jumper but he’s most dangerous when he gets his feet set behind the line. The Wildcats did a good job battling Gonzaga’s big men but Davidson was out-rebounded by six. If the Hoyas dominate the boards, it might be too much even for Curry to overcome.

The key players: Georgetown’s Jessie Sapp vs. Davidson’s Stephen Curry. Sapp will no doubt get help from Jonathan Wallace and Austin Freeman but his defense on Curry will be where the game is won.
