Sophomore Taylor Bankston is one of many young players helping Burleson keep its winning ways despite losing a heralded senior class that reached the Class 5A Region I finals twice in the past four seasons. This group is young (eight sophomores), with most playing their first varsity season, but the winning hasn't stopped. Burleson enters the week 17-7 and in second place in District 4-5A.

"We just practice hard and give it all we can," Bankston said. "It's been fun."

Bankston has also made the adjustment of playing for her mom, head coach Regina Bankston. Taylor said she was worried at the start of the season, as she didn't want teammates thinking she made the team because of her mom. It's worked out, with Bankston playing in the outfield and hitting second for the Lady Elks.

Outside of softball, Bankston wants to be a veterinarian and is usually with the family's four dogs (two basset hounds and two beagles).

"They keep us busy," she said.

What's it like having four dogs around the house?

It's fun. They keep me entertained. If you're having a bad day, you can always talk to them.

Did you always want to be a veterinarian?

Before, I didn't know 100 percent because I love animals so much and I didn't know if I could put an animal down. That would be kind of hard.

Your mom is the head coach - what's the best thing about having her as your coach?

It's all pretty good. At home, she'll give me lessons. So the coaching never really stops.

So, is there a bad thing?

Not really. I still get yelled at. At first I thought it would be bad, but it's been fine. After the first couple games, it's started to get better.

What changed and made you realize it wouldn't be that bad?

I started playing. The first couple games, I didn't get to play much.

Is she harder on you because you're her daughter?

A little bit. She probably expects more of me because she wants me to prove to everybody that I made it and I didn't make it because my mom is the coach.

Did that happen?

No, my teammates are great.
