Noel Luna happened to be watching the popular Spanish sports program Republica Deportivo when the show spoke directly to his soccer heart.
FC Dallas was holding an open tryout as part of the show’s “Sueno MLS” or MLS Dream reality show.Luna, 17, gathered up his soccer pals and the group headed up to Frisco to join 2,000 other prospective pros. After three weeks, Luna remains in the final group of 18 players still hoping to earn a two-week trial with the professional club. His success is hardly surprising considering the Fort Worth Trimble Tech junior forward has scored 39 goals and added 16 assists this season. The final 18 prospects are scheduled to play a scrimmage Saturday and the winner is set to be announced on March 30 during the 10 a.m. to noon broadcast of Republica Deportivo on Univision. What’s it been like being a part of the Sueno MLS program? “It’s been a great experience. I made the final 60 then the final 18. It’s been a great experience. I’ve met people from all around the world, Cuba, Argentina, all around the United States.”How were you able to catch the scouts’ eye out of 2,000 players? “I participated a lot in the game, good passes, made good decisions, not play around with the ball too much. They wanted players who could play like a team not individual players and that’s what I did.”What are your plans for the future? “My plans are to go to college, try to get a scholarship to play soccer if it’s possible. I just want to keep playing soccer and hopefully go pro.”What would you major in at college? “Architecture, that’s my major here at Trimble Tech. I like to sketch, drawings and stuff. I’d like some day to make my own house.”So what pro teams do you pull for? “My dad cheers for (Club) America from Mexico. I go for Morelia. My whole family goes for America but not me. I don’t know I just liked Morelia since I was little.”
